Pricey Gimmick? 18 years 2 weeks ago #1

I spotted a bottle Deus in the Liquor Store of Stoneybatter going for 25 quid. I have heard of this stuff being pricey, but the guy in shop told me it was 'champagne beer' as if it on some way justifies the cost of it. Is this an example of a beer that can be bought for a tiny fraction of the cost on the continent?

Looks like the Brits have paid even more....

[quote:1s5h503s]Joanna Simon, the Sunday Times [b:1s5h503s]wine critic,[/b:1s5h503s] said: “It’s a very good beer. But no matter how it’s dressed up — and, boy, it is dressed up — it’s still only beer.

“The palate is creamy-smooth, fruity and malty-sweet, and the finish is clean with characteristic beer bitterness. But it’s short and that’s the problem. Why pay good money for a taste that disappears in a couple of seconds? I’d rather have half a bottle of good champagne.” [/quote:1s5h503s]

Why ask a wine critic about Beer?

I bought my bottle[/url:29ag3swa] in the Spar across from the Bourse in Brussels for a tenner. I don't think it's worth €25 a go: get someone else to buy it for you <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

It is very expensive to make, and you get a glossy leaflet explaining the tortuous process. But the end result just isn't worth more than €10, if that.

I think Ms Simon has a point, even if I don't appreciate her tone.

At the end of the day the méthode champenoise or champagne method is really just a fancy way of carbonating and removing yeast. A fascinating process to see by hand, i suspect most are know done my machine know.

Pricey alright, but what there is a beer going round that claims it uses champagne yeast and charges a premium
