Just back from a weeks holliers in Tavira, Portugal. With a little digging you can find some pretty good craft beers alongside the usual Super Bock and Sagres. Having said that I really enjoyed the stout offered by both.

If in Tavira the best place for craft is a little deli / gourmet store with two tables. Ex Libris Gourmet on Rua 5 de Outubro 10 is a treasure trove of goodies. Tiago the owner is a great supporter of all things local and artisanal. He stocks the Sovina range of beers from Porto. A good helles, a resin linke IPA and a pretty good stout. I smuggled home a bock to try later. 330ml bottles at approx €3.
He also stocks beer from Tavira. Moura is a start up brewery run by a local couple. They have a very tasty dark ale brewed with carob which lends a very nice chocolate aftertaste.

A day trip to Faro is a good choice for a break from the beach. We came across Boheme, boheme.pt a new craft beer bar near the marina. They stock a good range of Portuguese crafts. The picks for me were Colina IPA from Lisbon, a very good US style IPA also a cracking stout by Rapada.

Other brands were

Bolina
Maldita
Mean Sardine
Red Mosquito
Passarole

Mainly IPAs and Ambers, between €4-5 for 330ml bottles. Good staff, free wifi sports on TV.

Cheers for this! Heading to Faro next month for the Ireland match so I'll definitely check out Boheme. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

I was in Portugal in 2012. Wonderful country, amazing scenery, food to die for & among the friendliest people (& most helpful) people on the planet. But the term beer desert, didn't do it justice.

Delighted to hear things are changing.

Bolina do a very nice dry stout, lots of ash and licorice.
Maldita won Best Barleywine at the World Beer Awards, which ain't nothin'.
Passarola IPA is a totally decent APA; I'd put it up against Howling Gale or Metalman.

Glad to hear good Portuguese beer is getting beyond Lisbon.
