The flavours can be subtle, to say the least, and can very easily taste watery and bland. But when it works I really enjoy a pint of it. Porterhouse sell theirs too cold, not sure about Rebel in the B&C. I prefer mine from a room temp bottle, but the flavour never hits you over the head like other beers.

Straight to the heart of the matter as usual.

Are you suggesting that Joe Public would drink the hop tastic Hooker if it got enough advertising exposure?

Plenty of people drink Smithwicks, but you may as well drink a pint of iced water. You can tease a little out of a warmed bottle though.

Part of the mass-produced mass-appeal thing is a total lack of distinctive flavour. In New Zealand, light tasteless red beers are the default product of all the main breweries, and lager is more of a specialty.

Noby, that's really interesting about drinking Irish reds at room temp. I've never done that and must give it a go.

Adeptus and n1mbus promised me a night of ambient McArdle's in Walkinstown, but it never happened <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: --> So much for Valentine's day...

It's the only way really. Similar to stout, it really brings out the flavour, although not as intense.

Smithwicks has a lot of failings, but serving it at lager temps does it no favour. Similarly with the Porterhouse and their damned nitro.
