I shared a bottle of this last night with a friend. It was past its Best Before date although we unfortunately did not spot that at the check out.

Thing is, I couldn't get any of the descriptors used to describe its aroma on the Beer Advocate website (principally grapefruit, pine, citrus, some pineapple).

The first smell that hit me was something approaching mintiness. It almost had a curry-like smell to it. THere was a definite warmth to it. In the end, since I was drinking it at home, I was able to go over to the kitchen and actually get some spices out to compare. The smell was like a mix of 'mixed herbs' (which I think is mostly thyme and oregano) and fenugreek or cumin.

Anyone else get this? I assume it's not just me as my mate was getting the same aromas off it.

It's extraordinary how much the taste of a beer can change over time. I would like to try it fresh, but I found it a very pleasant drink last night all the same and probably much more interesting to me than a nose full of grapefruit would have been.

It sounds like the hop oils had well and truly buggered off.

Had it fresh several times in NY, and it's predominantly chalk and nettles: one of the more unforgivingly bitter American IPAs and the benchmark for San Diego-style pale ales.

I'd agree with Andrew - sounds like yours was dead; though keep in mind that Stone short-dates.

I had one of these last night too, I bought 2 at xmas, they're pretty expensive, as i drank them both from draught and bottle last april in florida, and last nights one WAS different from my FLA experiences, last nights flavours would not have me rushing to get more, but in Florida they tasted great, like four in a row great. Probably wouldn't buy in bottle here again.
