Also, with the top cooling first you'll get convection currents going to bring more warm wort up to the surface, whereas I don't think convection works the other way to bring hot wort down to the lower layers.

Yeah convection by it's very nature is the act of hot water/air rising then cooling then dropping.

I'm gonna do the chiller using the 150mm pipe as a guide but I'm not gonna double wrap it. I'll probably do about 15 to 20 loops. Looking forward to doing this now. I'm off work on Friday so I'll do it then.

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Finally got around to making it over the weekend and I'm delighted I did. It makes such a difference to overall brewing time and hassle. Cooled 20 litres of Wort to pitching temperature in less than 30 mins.

Here's a couple of pics of the finished chiller. First one is without the extra hose connections and the second one is with them

Great tip about using some syphoning tubing to make the pipe fit snuggly in the hose, it worked a treat.

Made another one tonight so if anybody wants to buy it then check out the thread in the Market Square.

DIY mash tun and wort chiller 14 years 10 months ago #60

Would 3/8th inch tubing like the below link work as the spacer tube for the wort chiller from the brewing knowledge section of the site?

Or do i need a different size?
