Incidentally, I watched "The Restaurant" on RTÉ 1 last night. If you are not familiar with it; they have a "celebrity" come in and prepare and cook a menu and are subjected to evaluation by food critics and some Joe publics. They also get to select wine to go with the meal. John Waters was last nights celebrity and he chose 2 wines, one of which was a non alcoholic red that cost €5 at a farmers market. As it is one of my missions in life to encourage beer with food, I sent the show an email asking them had they not considered beer with food, and referring them to some articles. I suggested that well chosen beer would at least surpass the red (that no one could drink!). We will see if I get a response, but I'm not holding my breath!

The Porterhouse and Carlow Brewing (I think) quote Tom Doorley and John McKenna giving rave reviews of their stouts. AFAIK Doorley is one of the critics on the show. Whatever about the critics the clientele on this show don't look like they would be open to beers accompanying their food. Maybe I'm just cynical....

On another note, which will hopefully make you all jealous, I had a couple of pints of Porterhouse TSB at lunchtime. mmmmmmmmm

So, you must be doing less work than me!

I think to get in to the Restaurant you have to have some grand opinions about how food should taste. Being from D4 probably helps too.
I guess it's up to the celebrity chef to bring some beers.

That's something I mentioned in the email I sent the show. I was asking if all of the series was already filmed, because the list of "celebrity chefs" is already listed. Diarmuid Gavin is one, and I think he is a beerman. I figured if the shows were not filmed yet, the next step would be to try and convince one of the so-called celebs.

Maybe I'm only dreaming!

Montys of Kathmandu is a restaurant on Eustace Street in Temple Bar and serves its own commissioned beer. Its typical of an asian-style lager and similar in taste to Tsing Tao, which is not saying much at all. Tastes a little like dishwashing liquid, even has the big bubbles inside the bottle too!!

The food here is great though, and if you want the dumplings you need to order them in advance. Get them!

Gruel on Dame Street, another good spot, serves the organic ale and 1698 from Whitstable Bay. These beers are real tasty, and go down well with any food.
This is one of these great places you can go for an hour or two, get some grub, drink good beer, and get some more grub with a beer.

Both places I'd recommend

BTW - does anyone know who brews the beer for Montys? I have an inkling it might be the brewers out in Trim, Co. Meath.
