TOPIC:

Addition of of a Brewing terminology Glossary? 16 years 8 months ago #1

I'm fairly new this Brewing malarky and found the site extremely to be extremely helpful, especially the [b:2l99bjg3]Knowledge Base[/b:2l99bjg3] section. I've even used the guide to Small Scale Brewing for my first brew.

One thing that I've noticed that seems to be missing is a good Glossary.
It'd be nice to have a nice article detailing what each term was.

Is there one already?

Some hapless noob asked for one a while back[/url:13r3yehq] and nothing happened.

You do pick up the terms after a while, and you can always ask. But we still should do something about it. Anyone care to start an article on it?

Actually, I think an article like that could work as a community effort for ongoing maintenance (like the pubs that stock Irish craft beers and the Irish beer producers, both get input via the forums and get appended by the admins or authors on the communities behalf), but it needs someone to give it a good kickstart (and clearly not me, based on another thread on the same subject).

Very true, but it'd be nice to have a handy reference point when starting off. It gets quite confusing when you hear so many different terms when reading an article.

Airlock
Alpha Acid
Aroma Hops
Beer Kit
Blow-Off Tube
Burton Salts
Conversion
Decoction
Ester
Fermentation
Grist
Hydrate
Hydrometer
IBU
Krausen
Light-Struck
Lovibond
Malt
Mashing
Original Gravity
Pitch
Priming
Racking
Smack Pack
Sparge
Specific Gravity
Starter
Steeping
Torrified Grain
Wort

There's a list of commonly used Brewing terms. I took it from a brew calculator that I use, wasn't too sure about printing the expanded definitions too as it might be copyrighted if they were lifted in full.

Maybe the more knowledgeable people of the community could add an explanation or two to each item, and feel free to add to the list also.

After a while there should be a fairly concise to sticky.
