The date should be as good as irrelevant. Even when it gets damp and sticks together it's still good once you can dissolve it.
Even though I do all grain now, I still keep mine for making starters and the like. Also good in case I ever mess up somehow in a mash and totally miss my numbers, the malt can be used to make up the difference.
