By that I mean, his father and he were appointed brewers for the bishop prior to him moving up to Dublin. Can't back any of that up, its purely a word of mouth type of thing.[/quote:36jlzbo6]Actually, he was born in Celbridge where his father, Richard, was a steward of Oakley Park Estate for Arthur Price, then vicar of Celbridge, who later became Archbishop of Cashel. It seems his father would have supervised brewing on the estate, and later, in 1722, either he or Price, not sure, leased Carberry's Brewery (now the Mucky Duck, formerly Norris's Bar?) which is where Arthur Guinness was born in 1725. His father remarried, I think in 1752, or was it 42, to Elizabeth Read who owned the White Hart Inn (now a Londis on Celbridge Main Street) where, presumably, brewing was also done. Arthur's first brewery in Leixlip was leased, with his brother, Richard junior, in 1755 where the Courtyard Hotel is now sited. By all accounts, it was some sort of ale they would have brewed, as would the St. James's Gate brewery initially. I can't remember when they started making porters, I think the 1770s, and ale production stopped by 1799.

This is far too unhealthy an interest

AFAIK formal brewing records only go back to 1820 or so. There's just a chance reference in some other contemporary account of the last batch of ale leaving the brewery in 1799.

The main question here is would Arthur have been a hiller or a farender?

Neither - he commuted from Celbridge!

It is safe to say so that Arthur's first brewery was in Leixlip?

The first that he co-ran with his brother with his name on the lease, yes. As to whether this counts as his first brewery, well, I suppose he was brewing in Celbridge with his Dad before that, so does that count?
