Digital Scales 17 years 9 months ago #1

Hi all,
not selling anything but I wanted to alert anyone close to limerick that 'Home Store and More' have a digital scales (1g increments) for a tenner on sale. It's over in Ballysimon beside the B+Q and Halfords.

Perfect for measuring hops!

I once tried digital scales for brewing, but they had a battery saving thing that meant they turned off after 5 minutes or so of non-use. Unfortunately when you turned them on again they re-zeroed so you lost the weight you already had on there. If you are sufficiently organised to be able to weigh out what you want quickly then this may not be a problem but for me I found it infuriating and I kept losing track of where I was in my weighings. So I returned mine to the shop I got it from and replaced it with one of those old-fashioned ones with pans and weights. No batteries, no memory problems, good (as supplied) to 1/4 oz (~6g) but I found that I could also use crown corks as ~2g weights if I wanted to (but in practice I've never needed to).

So you may want to check whether these digital scales have an auto power off that also amounts to a re-zero before parting with your money.

Mine has an auto-off function, but I never had a problem with it. I weigh out the grains one after another, and then the extract in normally two sessions as the bowl on it only holds about 2kg DME. It weighs to the nearst 1g, so it pretty good with the hops too. Small, tidy, and easy to read in the "stress" of a busy brew day <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

As long as you don't walk off for a few minutes in the middle of weighing something, there's no hassle.

Mine also has a zero-setting function which is useful if you want to weigh a few things into the same bowl. Weigh out a couple hundred grams of grain, hit the re-zero button, then weigh out some different grains. Saves having to use the brain to do the maths <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

All personal preference of course.

I've been caught out with zeroing a few times but on the whole I think digital scales work quite well. What I can't figure out though, is why my scales have a thermometer on them.
