I got a hana digital thermometer on flea bay last year for 10 quid sterling plus postage and it's spot on and never fails me. If i was still breaking glass ones i'm sure i would have spent more by now

Spend the money and get one with an alarm. They're really handy and have many uses. Use it to alert you to an unacceptable decrease in mash temp, to warn of an on-coming boilover, to experiment with and perfect internal fridge temps, cheesemaking, whatever.
It can also to be used in a kettle BBQ when using it as an oven to cook large chunks of meat such as my famous "dancing chicken" aka beer-can chicken aka 'chicken with a beer can up its rear end'.

bugger!

i broke it . it now clearly reads that the room temp in my house is 35.5 degrees C , it clearly isn't telling the truth when im wearing a coat and thermal socks, oh well back to the old glass, easily breakable, but ultimately relaible thermometer.
