Good fun that, though I can't say I was surprised by the result

I did confirm my theory that Irish red and crap keg bitter are the same thing: there's no discernible difference between Bass and Smithwick's.

The staff at O'Neill's were great. I think they might be used to this sort of lunacy now.

Any initial reactions on the tasting? I had planned to head along to it, but the weather was too miserable to stand around waiting for unreliable public transport to bring me in to it. I stayed warm and dry at home instead.

Sorry TBN, didn't mean to ignore your initial comments, that's down to my slow one handed typing. I'm clutching a coffee tightly, to wake and warm me up! I hate mondays

But O'Hara's was the overwhelming favourite (4 out of 5), and Rebel Red was second. A_Friend_In_Mead was the dissenter, but had O'Hara's in second. Then there's a [i:2v3xlc7x]huge[/i:2v3xlc7x] gap down to Bass and Smithwick's where it was pretty much impossible to say which was better. I think everyone did express a preference eventually, but it was a major act of will to do so. And then there was Kilkenny. I had previously believed that it was totally tasteless, but learned that it is in fact actively unpleasant. Séan got brown apples from it.

I thought it was a really fun test. As Smithwicks is now my 4th favorite Irish red (well 6th if you count Rusty and Porterhouse) I do not intend to spend money on it again.

Also suprising was how identifiable the beers were. Smithwicks and Bass got mixed up but everything else people got spot on.
