ICB Munster Meet Friday 29.8.08

We had a very enjoyable Meet last Friday night at the Bierhaus. In attendance were Rebel, Noby, Oconn, Ger with Dave, Scribbles and Philip popping in and out of different tastings. A very enjoyable evening was had with the following beers sampled;

Beeristhereason’s Coffee Peppermint Stout – BITR was unable to join us but kindly dropped in a few bottles for sampling. This was a most interesting stout. I never had a Peppermint stout before. I suppose the beauty of home brewing is that one can come up with different and perhaps somewhat unusual flavours not usually associated with commercial beers. Well done BITR on a most interesting stout.

Rebel’s Extract Stout – This was a very nice decent stout and most pleasant to drink.

Rebel’s Home Made Cider, - Rebel presented a bottle of home made cider which he had made and bottled two years ago. He was unsure how it would taste but all felt it was very nice. No artificial ingredients in this and a most pleasant cider.

Rebel’s Ale – A Smithwicks type kit ale!!!!!!

Noby’s Brown Porter. - This was a very nice porter which we all waxed lyrically about. A great stout from Noby – great that he made the way up to Cork for the night.

Noby’s Wheat Beer – A very nice wheat beer. I believe light beers can be more difficult to make but this was a very nice wheatbeer.

Oconn’s Ale made with Cascade hops - A really lovely ale with strong cascade flavour. We all felt this was really very nice. The Cascade flavour really added to the ale.

As well as the above we sampled some commercial brews – Pilsner Urquell on draught, Cooper’s Stout (a big hit with all present), Galway Hooker, Hacker Pschoff Wheat beer (a new arrival to the Bierhaus and a nice Weisbier too) and Murphy’s Stout (although a commercial stout a recent award winner at the ICB Stout Tasting!!).

All in all we had a really good night. Thanks to Dave for his hospitality in facilitating our meet. It was great to have a meet where four homebrewers’ beers were sampled. Lots of advice and opinions exchanged. We discussed a few ideas for future meets. It looks like in the near future that most likely there will be an Oktoberfest in the Franciscan Well in October as per usual and perhaps in late November we will do a trip to the Harbour Bar in Kinsale – will consider same closer to the time.

Thanks to all for providing great beer for tasting – Definitely if not for ICB being formed we would not have met!!!

Until our next meet ……….
