Best before dates of craft beers 11 years 4 months ago #1

Ive had a few bottles of beer the last few days that haven't tasted as good as i remembered. Im wondering if it has anything to do with the age. Sierra Nevada pale ale and Schneider weiss tap 7 have both been lackluster.

Does anyone know how long they date them after bottling? Eg 1/2 years etc. Ive read that brewdog do 1 year and having a punk ipa over 6 months old tasted terrible.

It varies.

Sierra Nevada's date info is here, quite interesting:

Yeah i thought it varies, what im looking for is some specifics here if anyone has any.

That sierra guide doesn't help me. Im currently in croatia and it has an italian back label which leaves out bottling dates. Ive found her that all the beer i have gotten has a BB date of early 2015 and that the importers bere are getting old stock from italy/german etc.

So im wondering do most do a 1 year expiration etc. The sierra and Schneider are quite poor and i would think that they are styles that should be fresh. While i was very excited to be able to find them here originally i have been quite disappointed

Generally, beer doesn't age well. Except for high alcohol ones (which may be interesting to let spend some time in the cellar), beer start to significantly change from the very moment it gets bottled. Hops are the first to fade away, while temperature and light exposure can lead to premature oxidation. After "best before" date, beer won't be bad as such, but definitely not at its best anymore

The BB date is a choice of the brewer, AFAIK, and usually depends on how fresh they want you to drink their creation...

TL;DR: Yes, expect 1-year expiry dates on American beer in Europe.

American brewers don't like to advertise that they have different BBD dates for domestically distributed and exported (i.e. the ones we get) beers, but lying about it would be worse.

I've had separate correspondence with Ska, Sierra, and Sixpoint (yes, it's a pet peeve of mine) wherein they've admitted that they'll do 4-6 months for the US, but a year on bottles/cans labelled for foreign markets.

Odell keeps it simple by just giving a packaging date, and I wish more breweries did this, but there seems to be some legalese around giving an expiry date, plus Born On dating just seems to confuse some people.

For Sierra, at least, as well as Oskar Blues, Lagunitas, Stone (soon), and a few others, things should improve now that they've opened East Coast/Mid West breweries, cutting a couple of weeks off of distribution across the Atlantic.

None of which helps you in Croatia, but for what it's worth...

Well that does help. 1 year is what i guessed at near the end of that year the beer is very poor! Im going to buy the same beer as soon as i can back in ireland for a taste test.
