Hollands in Bray now offering Growler fills 13 years 1 week ago #1

I was walking past Hollands the other day and they had brew dog growlers on offer. €9 gets you a growler and €18 get you a growler and a fill. You get about 2.5 pints and isn't totally flat when you drink it...

Problem is that they are filling them from the tap and it means that if you do not use a tube and fill from the bottom up, that you are left with a big dead space that the gas leaks out into.

Having said that the guy reckons that they are committed to the growler route and the plan is for them to have specials (cask & keg) in the off-licence only for the growler trade.

Why not pop in with a length of tubing or two for them and show them how to fill "bottom-up"?

Yes I'll definitely have a chat with them next time I'm in.

Are you saying it's not actually 2.5 pints and they're charging for a lot of foam ?

Regional wines in Wellington do this and its huge. 20 taps pouring, fill your own plastic bottle (0.75L, 1.5L, 2.25L) or glass growler. Its cheaper than bottled beer, and you can get all the seasonals and specials to take home and enjoy without having to wait for the brewer to bottle them. Taps are steel stems, which fill the vessel from the bottle up. Beer is fresh and there are no issues with carbonation that I ever noticed.

Huge in NY, too. (But not many other states due to local variations in licensing laws.)

You've now even got some growler stations that purge the bottles with CO2 and then "cap on foam" (fill to the top and cover right away) so you're basically reproducing the bottling process - beer can last 1 month or more.
