Hi have emailed the secretary of the Co Show saying that I have noticed an increase in interest in Craft Beers & Ciders recently and my suggestion is that they consider adding Home Brew to the HOME PRODUCE section.

As well as being a way of opening the category to Clare people who might not otherwise have an entry, it may be a great way of encouraging the skills in brewing while encouraging higher standards. Probably too late for this year, but let's see how it goes,

Now how would we create some Judges? - I do not think we would struggle to find volunteers, but how might we accredit them - There's an opportunity here

I wouldn't worry about accreditation too much: I personally think that judging the abstract technical merits of a beer against a set of pre-ordained criteria is dull as dishwater, and the more important thing is Is This Beer Nicer Than The Other Beer?

Competitions I've been involved with have usually had a mix of judges, and I think that works well: a "normal" beer drinker, a beer geek, a home brewer, a commercial brewer -- whoever you have available to you.

How you arrange the marking and categories depends on how many entries you have. The simplest is to just have a marking sheet with, say, marks out of 5 for appearance and mouthfeel, and out of 10 for flavour and aroma, giving a maximum score of 30.

It would be great to see this as a normal part of shows like this the way it is in other countries.

What if there were 2 categories in the Home Produce Section of the local County Show
- Best Homemade Craft Beer
- Best Homemade Craft Cider

How many enteries would we get for a Show in Ennis in August 2013?

Prize Sponsorship would be helpful in making it happen - I will probe the equipment ingredient suppliers and maybe Garden related Apple Tree suppliers if this looks like a runner - other Sponsorship ideas welcome

Looking good - Got the nod from the person responsible for the Home Produce section - Home Brew is a category in the 2013 show - That's the good news, That's great news - If it can work in Ennis who's to say we can ......... Now I have to figure out how to make it happen

What categories? (I would like Cider to be one - making some headway with this myself but not sure how many categories to have)
Prizes? - What makes it interesting (Cash, equipment, other)
Sponsors for prizes? - I guess this could be big if County Shows in other counties go for it - Hoping some suppliers will show an interest
Judges? - I'm liking TheBeerNut's earlier advice a "normal" beer drinker, a beer geek, a home brewer, a commercial brewer - will have to get to know some of these folks in the comming months
