€1.60 for a "dash"! 14 years 2 months ago #1

Don't want to name names, but I was in a well known pub up the Dublin mountains last night with a mate. Name sounds like Johnny Boxes but that's not it. Asked for a pint of Guinness and a pint of water with a dash of blackcurrant. Handed the barman a fiver to be told it was €6.20. Got the receipt. 80c a dash and there are apparently two dashes required for a pint of water!

FFS, considering that place relies a lot on designated drivers I thought that was flippin a bit rich. I won't be back.

So you're saying that a touristy pub was a rip-off [i:2e7ngox9]and[/i:2e7ngox9] that an Irish pub offered a really poor deal for someone on soft drinks? Sadly, this isn't news.

Johnny Fox's (which I think is somewhere up that general direction) is one of the very few pubs I've been to where a pint bottle of Guinness is cheaper than draught.

Thats only the beginning.

They sell merchandise aimed at said tourists.
One of the more slightly tongue in cheak items is " a jar of atmnosphere" at a fiver i think. Which is of course an empty heatons jar with a johnny boxes sticker on it.

Then they only sell long neck bottles of bulmers and no other cider. Its purely cos they charge almost the same price as other places would sell a large bottle. And they think people will drink the same amount regardless regardless of the price. And im sure they werent wrong back in the great cider boom of the celtic tiger years.

They dont seem to like serving food either, was out in the wicklow mountains a while back with the family for a walk, decided to call in here for dinner, went in,sat down, after a long time was given a menu, and then never approached again. Despite trying to get attention,no body was interested,
eventually another family came in and we just gave them our table and menu's. Never went back and never will <!-- s:x --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mad.gif" alt=":x" title="Mad" /><!-- s:x -->

I've been in a pub that specialises diddly-dee tourist twee, and may or may not rhyme with Donnie Boxes and had a very similar experience. My cameo as invisible man ended with me and Mrs Sarnie leaving the premises unfed. And mightily unimpressed.

I don't know about Donnie Boxes but in the one that sounds like, but isn't Johnny Boxes, it would appear that as long as you looked remotely Japanese you were guaranteed that you and your credit card would be well attended to.
