Yes stella was always 'wife beater', I remember hearing that from my days as a barman in London (nearly 15 years ago!)

When I lived in Cardiff, there used to be a beer called Hurlimans, I think? It's about 20 years ago now, and this was also called wife beater, and from what I remember it was the strongest beer on tap, and there was a lot of fights between people drinking it. This was when Stella was still selling itself as reassuringly expensive.

They've reduced Stella from 5.2% to 5%, I presume to shake off some of that image.

Shame that they didn't use the opportunity to throw some noble hops into their reformulated recipe and make a real pilsner while they were at it.
