Some places I've seen abroad just have a Members' List on a board on the wall somewhere. Something like the Bierhaus Academy might be quite cool.

In relation to the original post, I have some understanding of why pubs may be unwilling to listen to punters on the subject of beer selection, given the overheads and margins most of them work on. The people who have no excuse, however, are the supermarkets and in partcular Tesco and M&S who are already buying this stuff for the UK market. There's no reason their Irish shelves should be as poorly stocked as they are.

Publicans are unique in another sense, which is they don't have to compete in a free market. Since they have a happy little quirk of Irish law when it comes to licensing that keeps the pub trade in a nice little closed shop.

Want to set-up a pub in Ireland offering competitively priced beer, or a range beyond the usual? You'd better have a spare €150k-€200k over and above your regular costs to pay for a license with a massive artificially inflated price.

No need to go out and attract new custom or keep your prices competitive when there a huge barrier to entry to anyone who might take your business by offering a better price/range/service.
