Ciaran Cuffe was on Tonight with Vincent Browne the other night and was asked about this. He made some short speech about Ireland's "relationship" to alcohol and waxed on about how the continent has this great tradition of just having beer or two (or some wine) with your dinner in the evevning rather than drinking 70pints in about 3hrs and starting fights and all that.

Maybe he's not aware of Diageo's monopoly and that the "other" countries like France and Germany have real beers that you don't have to go on a treasure hunt for.

I thought in France you do have to go on a treasure hunt. I will know more at the end of the month when I go over.

I have been plenty of times but I have never noticed beer to be honest. Just a lot of wine.

In fact a French guy I know actually said that in France, Belgium does not have a very good reputation for beer <!-- s:shock: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt="" title="Shocked" /><!-- s:shock: -->
