Cain's Brewery Liverpool 17 years 7 months ago #1

I'm off for a shopping day-trip to Liverpool with my mam tomorrow. I'd intended to have lunch in The Brewery Tap on Stanhope St, which is the pub attached to the Cains Brewery. Or rather, I'd intended taking the Brewery Tour and getting two complementary beers and a light buffet as part of it

However, the tour has to be pre-booked, and I'm not having any luck doing so as their website won't let me, and the phone number goes straight to voicemail, from which they haven't returned my call.

So I'm looking for two things here: First, is anyone here familiar with Cain's beers, and if they are, what is their opinion on them? And second, although I can obviously still go to The Brewery Tap even if I can't book the tour (grrr), are there any other brewpubs or real ale pubs or food pubs I should think of instead?

We'll probably have to catch the bus at 6:30 or 7 to get back to the airport, so nothing that only opens in the evenings thanks

Unfortunately Cain's are now in administration. It appears that they made an unfortunate business decision in buying another company and taking on their debts but those debts proved too much.

I've tried a few Cain's beers and they are lovely. So I hope that you got to taste some, even if you didn't get a brewery tour. I also hope that they get over their current difficulties and can continue brewing.

Yeah, I discovered that shortly after posting by actually paying attention to the website

I got to go on the tour, which wasn't bad for a generic commercial brewery tour. But the two beers I tried.....oh I am so, so gutted they've gone into administration! I really, really hope (as does pretty much everyone) they can find a buyer who wants to take the brewery on as a going concern, and will continue to brew the same beers. I had the Raisin Beer and the IPA and the Raisin Beer was absolutely gorgeous. I'm desperate for more, but don't know how to get it, especially since it's only available for a month

They're highly unlikely to get over their current difficulties - they need something like £36m. They went up to the Head Branch of Bank of Scotland, but BofS had literally that day announced losses of £77m, so said no can do

We had Cain's Raisin beer while in Yorkshire recently. It was very nice but I didn't know they were going out of business. What a pity!

Cain's Raisin beer is lovely. Hopefully they can keep making it.

And yes I always look that intensely serious while sampling beer
