County Waterford Recommendations... 17 years 10 months ago #1

We might have a day in County Waterford... and we have never been. Any recommendations on towns with good pubs? Seaside would be our preference.

I guess I should take this one. Not sure of your location, but I'll presume you don't know the County.

I can recommend good pubs, but I'll be hard pushed to recommend pubs with interesting/different beers.

Waterford city may be your best bet for finding a pub with a good beer selection, but I don't know the place that well.
Staying coastal, Dunmore East is a nice fishing village with a small beach. There are a couple of nicepubs and restaurants whose names escape me at the moment. Next along is Tramore. A tourist-orientated town with a big beach and loads of amusements etc. I can't really recommend a pub, but if you like water sports like surfing this is the place for you.

Heading west, I recommend taking the coastal route, if you're not in a rush. Spectacular views of the sea, and some nice villages along the way.

Dungarvan, my home town (to quote the song) is also by the sea. Down on the quay the Moorings is a good spot. Nice pub, beer garden, or you can sit out front. They also do food. Further up the quay is the Anchor, which used to be a great pub, but only recommend it if you're young and hip now. Just off the Square, coming from the quay is the Lady Belle, another good spot.
Just off the opposite corner of the Square is Quealy's. This is your best bet for a slightly different beer, and even that will be nothing too unusual. They do great food here. If the Local, in the Square, has music on it will be the best trad music in town, if that's your thing.
A couple of miles outside the town is Ring, a headland you can see from the town, where I live. Just off the main Cork road is the Seanachaí, an old thatched pub, also with food. Further down into Ring, towards Helvick there are three pubs. Mooney's is probably the busiest, and often has music on, Murray's, further on towards Helvick is the nicest if you ask me. Very local pub, nice to sit out in front on a sunny day, looking out to sea.

The next coastal stop, heading west, is Ardmore. A small village, with a big beach. White Horses is a good restaurant here, and Paddy Mac's pub is probably the best of a limited few.

Enjoy.
Now I'm off to collect my commission from the Waterford Tourist Board.

You didn't even mention the pint bottle. Isn't that a particular local delicacy?

Of course. How could I leave that out. Any decent pub should have a stock of large bottles of Guinness. In the cooler and on the shelf. To really appreciate it, and to be accepted by the locals you should order yours off the shelf (any bar person worth their salt should give you the option, not just go straight to the fridge).
Large bottles of Harp, Bass, Smithwicks are not as common, but still pretty plentiful.

as my friend used to say
[quote:312xpujy]pint bottle off the shelf you, sir, lad, none of that cold shite for me![/quote:312xpujy]
in a thick west waterford accent. if that didn't send you falling off your barstool in knots nothing would.

In fact, this is inscribed on the Waterford coat of arms:
