Porterhouse question 18 years 1 week ago #1

Do Porterhouse have some sort of beer 'expert' working for them in each pub advising staff on how to serve beer properly, storage of beers and stuff like that? I was in Porterhouse North last night and had some Rochefort 8 which came straight from the fridge...it was so cold I could hardly taste it

Don’t think so... Was it at least in the right glass??? Its up to the supplier/Brand Manager to decide whether or not staff get training in that area. for EU Beer Inbev are normally good for that the rest don’t have much representative’s in IRL
Best bet is to talk to the Bar manager... they may not be aware of the ritual behind each beer, and the more styles of beer you serve the more confused staff can get......

no, they don't even get the staff to push their own beer

it was served in a plain snifter type glass which was good. Porterhouse seems to have gone downhill a lot in recent years and seems to be simply a money making machine. I had a pint of Galway Hooker in the Temple Bar branch a few weeks ago and it was horrible....completely flat with no head. I'm glad it wasn't my first ever pint of Hooker otherwise I wouldn't have gone near it again

i would have to agree completely. the staff havent a baldy and the music is so loud in both of the southside pubs id rather stay at home...but it does empty out nicely round 11 when the clubbers go dancin' ...thank god. no more calls for a bud lite or a pint of ken....although they sneakily have starting selling bottles of said beers and a host of other blandness much to the annoyance of many a drinker....met dardis clarke there last fri though...couldnt talk to him ...way too loud

Gone are the days of yore when the Porterhouse was a haven for true beer afficionados, to be honest. They're a victim of their own success, truly and honestly.

AFAIK back when it started up, and the brewing was actually done on-site in the Temple Bar premises (the only one they had) - and even up until I started drinking there, which would have been '00/'01 all staff had 6 months down in the brewery at some stage, to learn about beers. The Porterhouse's own brews were pushed - NOTHING else was available on draught, though they did have to start getting in bottles of Bud/Heineken/what-have-you - and if you didn't really know what to go for, were a bit confused by all this stuff that was apparently beer (or even thrilled skinny by the prospect, but had no idea what was what) they could describe and explain about the beers, and recommend things to you.

Basically like the B&C is now.

Which is why I really, really, really don't even want the B&C to become so successful that the have to see out. (If they become a huge success because of doing exactly what they do, and thus stay doing exactly what they do, that's a whole different kettle of fish <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->)
