Off Licence selling out of date beers 18 years 3 weeks ago #13

I used to frequent that offie when I lived in that part of the city. They had a fair few quality beers that hadn't been input into the barcode scanning till. So invariably you'd get whoever was behind the counter making up the prices as they went along, which would usually be whatever a can of Bud was selling at.

I got a lot of in-date bargains in there and if the made-up price turned out to be particularly good, I'd frequently "find" an extra €10 in my pocket and decide to splash out on a few more bottles.

If only the same trick worked in Sweeneys...

Probably at worst some of the hop's may have dropped off, sweet deal

I picked up an arm full of SNPA at a quid a bottle a few years ago when Sweeney's was in their old location on Dorset Street.

It seems to me they were just being diligent about the use by date of their stock, but the beer proved damn near fresh anyway.

I think the comments in particular about the abbot ale house are more than a little unfair. They usually have lots of beers clearly marked as special offers with Best Before Upmarked and willoftne even remind you of this. Differnece of course between Best Before and Use By as mentioned already.

Also the only reason some of the more expensive drinks become out of date is because they are not bought. Would we prefer if they just concentrated on sellig the big sellers and did not buy some of the niche and other beers? I know you can't please everyone but overall we should support the off licences that give us a decent choice and not penalise them.

As for Seans's comments re Heidelberger beers on sale - I have seen them in bradleys Off licence in Cork for past few montsh and in one supervalu shop as well. Two were in as special one-off cases in Bierhaus in Cork before Christmas so some importer must be trying to get them established here. I tried one of the winter/christmas beers and it was o.k. from memory.

Ger, Abbot Ale House and its like are the best we have and they should definitely be supported. On the other hand I think all outlets should routinely mark down stock that reaches its 'Best Before' date, it doesn't have to be a huge reduction initially and if customers are made aware of the reduction it will normally sell. Most of us are aware that beer beyond this date has not suddenly become poisonous but I don't think it should be for sale at full price months afterwards.
