Off Licence selling out of date beers 18 years 3 weeks ago #1

Just a heads up that the off licence next door to the Comet pub in Santry is selling quite few beers in there that are way past their best before date. I picked up a bottle there today that had a 2005 date on it (can't remember the beer..it was German and was a swing top)

disgraceful really considering they charge up to €3.50 for some of these beers

by the way I hope this is ok to post here

i hear ya.
the abbot ale house in Cork (when i was last living in cork long term-the time before now) was a bit of a culprit on this as well.

bad form.
i used to get the line
'yeah well its strong enough to keep well beyond its sell by date.'

thats true but not in an f'ing offy under glowing lights!!!

I doubt there's a decent beer off licence in the country that doesn't do this. But if the alternative is the proprietor saying "Fancy beer doesn't sell" and pulling the whole range from the shelves, then I've no problem with the out-of-date selling. It would be nice to see more places offering old stock at a discount, and even nicer if this could be done on a bespoke basis, i.e. a policy of x% off any out-of-date beer you find.

The bottom line, I think, is [i:23wqh9er]caveat emptor[/i:23wqh9er]: always check the date, and if you don't want it don't pay for it.

Seamus - Abbott's are still doing it. They're selling Deus, for example, at €27 with an expiry date of 01/01/08 which I only realised after having bought it. Numerous bottles of Rochefort 8 and Aventinus were past their expiry dates when I was there two weeks ago also.

As to whether it's a case of poor stock control or a sad indictment of the majority of Cork people's beer tastes is open to debate, but at the relatively expensive prices they charge we should expect a lot better.

Deveney's Rathmines used to be big into it, then stopped; as did Carvill's on Camden Street.
