Growlers in McHughs (Artane & Kilbarrack) 11 years 3 weeks ago #1

McHughs Off-Licence have recently started offering growlers of draught beer. Plenty of choice too:4 options available in each store, seem to get swapped out regularly and the line-up varies between both stores too!

Offering 1l and 2l growlers - check out their facebook and twitter feeds for whats on and prices!

It really looks like a good offering, and its another outlet for Irish brewers which is great! The only downer is that when I asked tonight in Kilbarrack, I was told they'll only refill growlers from their supplier for safety reasons.

re: own growlers only - They're worried about the CO2 pressure on glass, I'd told.

Same setup in Baggot St Wines and the CarryOuts, too. Great to see, especially since they're savvy enough to focus on beers that don't get bottled.

Got a litre of Black Bucket meself that I'm gonna open tonight. Only ever had one bottle of it and thought it was world class.

Can you re-fill these growlers in all good pubs, yeah?

In theory yes, but .....

unless the pub uses the same supplier for their growlers, its likely they too will have concerns about the ability to handle pressure. Its up to the pub really - I'm sure some may allow some descretion.

Personally, I think its a bit too risk-adverse on McHughs part (the pressures used are not that high that a standard bottle or growler can't handle them), but hey - their shop, their rules: Everything else about the offering is top-notch though - I really like the selections they've been offering to date - just wish they didn't want me to buy another growler when I have a few perfectly good ones at home!!

Cheers for the reply.

I'll call in and chance me arm in the Brew Dock next time I'm in that neck of the woods.

If pubs don't re-fill these things one of you Malahide/Kilbarrack heads can have mine...

KeeganAles response above gives me hope that there's a few other places with the same growler supplier, so I'd say you might be ok!

I got my growlers from a brewpub in Germany - pain in the ass to get refills from there now that I'm back home
