New craft-ish beer bar opening in Waterford, The Reg 12 years 5 months ago #1

There is a bar (re)opening in Waterford on Friday night that will be selling craft beer. All the advertising says "craft beer bar and dedicated whiskey bar" so I got a bit excited, the reality is not the craft beer Utopia that I imagined but its a start.
Newspaper article here[/url:22mzcl2e]
I contacted them through their FB page explaining who I was and asking for more info to maybe add them to the directory and the reply I received was:
"Hi Derek,
We will have 2 Metal Draught (sic) and 1 Eight Degrees Draught available along with a good selection of Bottled Craft beers which we will improve on as we go along.
Please call in sometime next week and ask for Donal or Pat."

This is an important step for the city because it is the first time a bar is offering an Irish craft beer on draught other than those from our local breweries (and God knows there are few enough even doing that). So I will be calling in next week for a chat (and maybe a pint) and will report back. Hopefully the people of Waterford and surrounds will support this and more importantly ask for the craft offerings so that side of the business is expanded and not the Diageo/Heineken part of the craft beer bar

That's good news for Waterford. They seemed to be tearing it apart and putting it back together the last time I passed the Reginald, to I'll be interested to see what they have done with it. You never know, if the craft beer they carry sells well, they may expand the range.

They have pumped quite a bit of money into it Séan, around 2.2 million supposedly. They say that they bought three houses adjacent to the pub to open up the space there, presumably to make the venue more visible. I was under the impression they were bought by the City to create an open space that was to house a full-size model of a longboat, according to the original plan for that part of the triangle.
It is squarely aimed at the tourist market it being on one point of the "Viking Triangle" which the City Council has fired a bag of money at in the last few years and has seen the revival of the Munster Bars fortunes.
I am a bit concerned at the whole diddley-eye music for the tourists bit but I would presume from the blurb that they are trying to get the 40-50 somethings, who remember the old "Reg" and Catch 22 disco in the nearby Tower Hotel, to provide the evening trade when all the tourists are gone to bed.
It will be quite nostalgic for people of my age group with the added attraction of some decent beer. It is already creating a stir on Facebook.

Spent large parts of Tues and Weds this week trying to install our taps and the 8Degrees one into what was still effectively a building site. I assume they got the place open on time, but it was looking unlikely. Need to go back in for a look. Hoping that they will expand the craft range in future and that the staff get behind it, we will see.

Speaking of refurbishments, if you've not been into Revolution recently, I would suggest to do so as it's now much more of a place that this craft beer drinker would like to spend time at least (and they've had a good range and interested staff for a looong time already). The music does still need work but the flashy lights are gone (yes, I am old).

Any sign of a Waterford Beoir/homebrewers meet up before Xmas?

There's no reason why you can't kick one off

They posted on fb that they were open from 5 yesterday but asked patrons to bear with them over weekend as they had a few things to finish. I have time to spare between 2 engagements later, hope to pop in for a swift one I will be close by.
I have been to Flashs since the refurb. He told me Grainne made him disconnect speakers in the corner one night I like the new look.
I am meeting most of the lads tomorrow to bottle our whiskey cask aged porter, I am sure we will discuss meetings and Christmas nights out. The 28th Dec. would be ideal for a short craft beer pub crawl I think. There will probably be a meeting the 23rd of this month in any case.
