Shipping beer to the States 13 years 6 months ago #1

Hi folks,

Just hoping to grab some advice from anyone who has shipped a box of beer to the USA before. I have a mate in Cincinnati who I'm going to trade with in the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone has any tips.

I'm planning to send a decent sized box 10-15 bottles and I'm going to wrap the hell out of them and double box. I'm also declaring the package as "collectible glassware and ceramics" in order to by pass any unwanted customs attention in the states.

I've heard that fed-ex is the best for shipping generally speaking, but I'm not sure what the story is here in Ireland...

I'm fully expecting this to be filthily expensive, but hey-ho it's nearly christmas (and I'm keen to get a box of american goodies in return!)

Anyway, if anyone's done this before then I'd love to hear from you.

All the best,

Alex

Good luck with that.
Cost based on weight as im sure you know. But here's what DHL told me earlier in the year when I enquired:

The general requirements for shipping alcoholic beverages are as follows:

Consignee (receiver) must be licensed alcohol beverage importer.

NO Personal shipments of alcohol accepted.

NO ALCOHOL / WINE DELIVERIES TO NEW JERSEY OR VIRGINIA.

All other states: Door to Door for Wine Only; & Door to Airport for Beer and Spirits.

For detailed info <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="web.us.dhl.com/gw-svcs/import/alcoholpolicyus.htm">web.us.dhl.com/gw-svcs/import/al ... licyus.htm

All alcohol samples must be marked 'For Trade Show (or Sample) Purposes Only - Not for Sale' and include a Certificate of Label / approval or a waiver. Example of waiver: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.ttb.gov/itd/cola_waiverrequest__template.doc">www.ttb.gov/itd/cola_waiverrequest__template.doc

Shippers are required to register with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Prior Notice is required for all food shipments with exception of person to person shipments. Prior Notification Fee; USD10. FDA entry prep fee; USD20. All commercial imports requires a Consignee Tax ID number. For further details; <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="web.us.dhl.com/gw-svcs/import/OtherAgency/FDABioterroismAct.htm">web.us.dhl.com/gw-svcs/import/Ot ... ismAct.htm.

In general, it is quite laborious to send even one bottle of beer to USA <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: -->

Cheers for the reply Thommo,

After decent advice from a couple of other folks I'm by-passing the honesty stage of proceedings and sending a box of collectible yet low-value ceramic jugs and glassware over instead of beer(wrapped up to the absolute maximum of course, so even the most diligent customs official would have to spend an hour unpacking the thing)

Naturally it's a risk, but from what I've heard, it often does work. It's going to be a nervous time, but fingers crossed!

Hey technology has just caught up with Star Trek.

Imagine the scene in the captains cabin: [Enter a knackered old John Luc]. Captain: "Well bugger it!!, I'm tired of hot Earl Grey. Now what do I fancy?

I know, [to replicator]: "Beer, IPA, Cold"".

Replicator: " Yes captain, I have the emailed recipe from Beoir in Ireland, it will be ready in 3 weeks"

Captain: "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot"

Yikes, a working, computer ( well email ) driven replicator!! Just need to get the timing dow from weeks to seconds.
