This used to happen to me a lot, until I realised what was happening was I'd get into the taxi, take my hat off and leave it on my knee and then forget about it. When I got up to go the hat would fall off and I'd leave without it.
So, I have habituated myself now to always stuffing my hat into a pocket when I take it off. No more lost hats.
