I thought the levy/tax was a percentage, not a fixed price.

This type of thing really is starting to get to me. I wonder how many of the Dail are pub owners....how many poopooooooooooed the cafe bar idea. How many are nobs....

The minister pointed out that selling two bottles if wine for 5 bills is wrong. I can only imagine the quality of that wine but how many jobs will such a move cost. They also want to limit the number of places alcohol is sold which means more jobs could be lost in alcohol retail. Where does this seem to make any sense?

I am all for responsible drinking but what is this going to achieve and who is really behind the idea? When I see the Vitners getting behind something it usually means I'm moving across the room.

I'm cranky. Maybe I'll go get plastered on cheap vitamin H.

Maybe the minister might want to sample those "2 for €5"$$ they were absolutely rancid according to all reports.

I was in Spain last weekend and the local supermarket was having a Feria De Vino. A huge amount of wine priced between €2 and €5. I bought a tempranillo wondering what a €2.50 bottle of tempranillo would taste like. I can say that it was not the most shining example of that varietal but was very drinkable never-the-less.

Bloody typical. One could adopt a cynical viewpoint and say they're only in it for the money.

Thankfully there's an international border on the island and there's also beer on the other side of it. Vote with your feet/wallet etc.

I was in the UK (across the water) two months ago. I was able to come out of the gig at midnight on a Sunday night, go to the pub and have a few pints of real ale, get the train home at 1:30am (pub didn't close till 5am btw), and stop off on the walk back to the hotel at 2:30am in Tesco and buy two bottles of Double IPA. If that's what's knocking around the UK I'll have some of that please.

To be honest I'm not sure if minimum pricing has been implemented anywhere in the UK. I was just trying to say that there has been a debate[/url:2gvodtae] around it over the last two or three years and that as usual our politicians are just importing (failed?) policies from across the water rather than engaging their brains before they issue their press releases.
