Back on topic, a friend of mine worked in construction in Siberia during the days of the USSR in the 1980's. They had an ingenious way of extracting alcohol from anti-freeze using long metal rods (as used in construction):
They'd leave the rod in the snow till it reached -35. Then they'd pick by one end and leave the other end in a bucket. Then pouring the antifreeze slowly on the rod at the top it would flow down and all the constituents would freeze to the rod except the alcohol, which would continue to flow into the bucket as its freezing point is -114.
