The guy in my job only monitors 2 areas with zoneminder. But he does it with cheap webcams perched on the inside of the window and said that you can easily add more than that.

These are the ethernet USB extenders i was talking about.

Zoneminder with a pile of cheap cameras is defo the way to go i think. Your budget sounds like it would even stretch to wireless IP cameras - but you can do it easily and reliably with zoneminder it seems.

Yeah, the main reason for the relatively short run on USB is the fact that it uses pretty crappy cable, by simply replacing a run of USB cable with CAT5 you can increase the run length significantly...

I have two 4 channel capture cards here from when I was looking at building one a while ago, but alas it fell by the way-side.

Make no mistake, I have no intention on this ending up in court (Just like I dont intend on being broken into), but it is nice to know that if it does; there are some deep pockets there to assist.

Hi Gues7,

I can only go on personal experience. I bought one of these [url:2iofm4xq]http://landashop.com/catalog/outdoor-camera-mjpeg-daynight-infrared-wifi-80211gb-p-1684.html[/url:2iofm4xq].

Its quite a good camera with night vision. I would recommend, getting a IP video recorder of some sort or hook up a pc running 24/7. If you are going to use the evidence in court.

I have the camera setup to send me an email every time motion is detected, which can be a bit annoying as shadows durning the day also set of the email alarm.

but all in all for the price I am very happy.
Just plug it into the eircom router and set up dyndns.org account for remote live access. It comes with software that you can hook up a pc and record any motion detection. U wanna get a big hard disk though.

Hope this helps,
any questions let me know.
Cheers
Ted

My brother has me on text alert with his security system and to be honest it's a real pain and I'm considering getting him to take me off it. Fed up of the 5am texts.

Not much use to you I know but something to consider none the less!
