What size is my CO2 tank? 15 years 1 week ago #1

I recently acquired a fairly old CO2 bottle, and I'm not sure what the capacity is.

The tare is 13.5Kg, and allowing for the weight of the regulator it would appear that the tank has about 7.8Kg of CO2 inside. It's 30 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. Is it an 8Kg tank?

TIA.

Did you per=chance aquire this tank from leinster Co2??

I picked up mine last week, I was assured it would last 6 months, Simon wasnt sure how much co2 was in there - only to assure me its full - i'd guess its about a 10kg tank. To be honest it looks pretty battered. I have wrapped it in grey underlay to help recover from the hurt of its previous owners.

On a brighter note - he didnt seem to have a problem re-filling Norms Tanks, he only said that it would be the same price as filling the big one - 25€.

You should weight it when you get it, and then when its empty, the you will know what the capacity is - its the best I can think of! If you think about it, the size of the tank is only relavant if all tanks were filled to the same max pressure - I really dont know what pressure my tank was filled to.

OH he showed me the 10 tonne tank of liquid co2 he uses - its pretty impressive!

I cant bring myself to buy another regulator though - thats just plain madness -

Great, so now that everyone has been telling them that €10 for a fill was a great deal they've decided to increase the price by 150%. Does this country ever change!

Exactly what I was thinking!

No I didn't, but it is pretty battered... I guess because of its age. TBH I don't really mind as long as it does the job.

I have been assured it's full, or pretty close to it. I don't mind that either as I was expecting it to be empty when I bought it.

Pressure is complicated. As there are ~54 litres of gaseous CO2 to 1 litre of liquid CO2 you can't fill a CO2 tank to more than ~54 bar. The gauge will only start to move (down) when the tank is nearly empty.

This guy has taken over from Munster/Leinster Co2 at these premises. He explained that the previous model wasn’t economically viable. The cost of a full tank is down from 60euro to 50 euro. Refills are up from 10 to 25. In fairness he drove from Swords to this place just to give me a tank.
Think about it - we get tanks filled every 6 months or so. Probably only one brewer a week (if that!). Would you drive to west Dublin on your Saturday, taking a couple of hours out of your day for 25€? Never mind his overheads.

Anyways this is the tank

I am coming from the mini keg world - so all this seems like great value to me.
