digital thermometer on the blink 15 years 9 months ago #7

It sounds like it is dead. I've gone through 2 el cheapo digital thermometers and there is no way of recovering them. <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: -->

I belatedly found that cheap digital thermometers are not waterproof and I guess that steam gets into them and destroys the sensor.

The solution is it pay a small bit more and either get a waterproof and/or one with a detachable K-type sensor. Then if the sensor goes you can replace it. I've decided to take the latter option with a view to getting different sensors for different applications. For example, I could fit a sensor into my mash tun and plug my meter in during mashing, but I haven't got round to this yet.

I've found [url:3iwb2vjc]http://www.thermometersdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Brewing_Home_Brew_Thermometers.html[/url:3iwb2vjc] to be useful.

I hope that this helps. At least you've only destroyed one thermometer, not two like me!

The Black Waterproof Thermometer looks to be the best value at £25, as the K-type with seperate probe, would be a bit expensive for me. Do you think this one would be okay for mashing?

Cheers,
Billy.

Can do - depending on atmospheric pressure may boil at less than 100.

None of the digital kitchen thermometers I've had have stood up to any decent use. The last one I had was quite expensive (€99) and it screwed up while I was using it to temper chocolate- had to throw the whole lot out.

I'm considering a Fluke 50 Series II.

Since they advertise it as a waterproof brewing thermometer I guess it should be OK and you should have some comeback if it goes on the wonk when used for its stated purpose.
