Was it truly awful ?
Was it just that no body cared for it on the night?
Or do people/you feel this thing simply cant make good beer with the material they supply for it?

I was thinking a buying one of these as a present for a friend of mine to get him started on homebrew but kinda reconsidering that now .

no- the beer was truly awful. However it was the default mix that came with the unit (a "Canadian Ale"). I'm currently doing an Amber Ale. It's a lot better but no where near a decent beer. However I did ignore the basic instructions (ferment for 5 days and then stick in fridge for 5 days). This one's had 10 days fermentation and 2 weeks in the fridge.

I'm considering that at the moment- It does fit very well in the fridge and it has a CO2 spigot so you can add carbonation if the brew starts going a bit flat.
