Opening a bottle of stout by putting it on the stove. A long way from Guinness Extra Cold.

My local hasn't the space of a super pub to have a dedicated cellar temp fridge, so everything is either from the cooler or the shelf. If the shelf is too warm, then a bottle from the cooler, when half way through the previous one gives it a chance to warm up nicely. It's not rocket science.[/quote:4nrpy15v]
True, but we're mainly griping about places like the Porter House here, where they 'pride' themselves on their beer collection, but then let themselves down at the point of sale. If I went to a 'regular' pub I'd be so impressed if they had something not mainstream, I wouldn't care about temperature, or to a lesser extent glass. But when you explicitly go to a particular pub, for the very reason of getting something different, you can't help but feel peeved.

And yes not being offered a glass is indeed rude. Who knows what has touched the neck of the bottle.

Leaving the bottle of stout next to the open fire is a forgotten art of Irish drinking.

Ahhh. Listen to the penny drop! I read it about four times looking to see something about the temperature of the beer, thinking that it had come from a fridge and he was trying to warm it up DOH!

Next time I'll post the whole story.

Now where's the beer reference in [i:35crzhwl]Finnegans Wake[/i:35crzhwl]..?

My Dad will often tell of how his mother was prescribed a bottle of Guinness every day for anaemia. The Guinness would be poured into a glass and then a hot poker from the fire was plunged into it. Needless to say, this caused both foaming and warming but that is how it was drunk.

Maybe it was thought that the poker treatment increased the iron content?
