cheers guys, will post the pic this evening when I get home. The more I read about it the more I'm starting to think maybe the regulator I have is for C02, whereas the guy who looked at it for me would be used to fitting mixed gas systems in pubs....

Looks like a mixed gas regulator - assuming you have a CO2 bottle you can either switch the gas to mixed gas (different gas bottle) or switch the regulator to a CO2 regulator and use your existing gas bottle.

Well I got a loan of a mixed gas bottle and regulator for the weekend and that connection doesn't fit the bottle!? So how would I get this connection to fit the other (mixed-gas) bottle as you suggested?

Hmmm, you've got me there. I have access to a mixed gas regulator, I'll take a pic of the reg and the gas bottle and compare them to yours, that might shed some light on it. Probably won't be until tomorrow evening at the earliest. Want to post a picture of your gas bottle connection in the meantime?

to be perfectly honest lads that connection looks just like the co2 connection that came with my regs from the uk. in my opinion it is designed to fit the male type co2 bottle. available from any good welding supplier.
