TOPIC:

What Irish craft beers are at the local off license 17 years 4 months ago #1

I feel like I've asked this question before, but couldn't find it.
Anyway, long story short, I've been living in america for years, and got into craft beer and brewing.
We will be home for our first christmas home in 6 years (we fly home friday).

Anyway, my brother asked me what kind of beer he should get in for when we get back because he knows I'm into my beers.

So, is galway hooker available at most off licenses?
Or what good irish beers are common in most offy's?

I'm in Letterkenny up in donegal, so sort of out of the way of cities to pick stuff up unless I can get it after we land in dublin.

Cheers

Edit: I also took up playing ice hockey since coming over here, so set up a blog to talk about what I really like, hockey, and beer. I'll be updating more frequently with recipes in the new year, but here it is for now

galway hooker is not bottled

O'hara's is common enough and Whitewater Brewery Belfast ale/lager and Clotworthy Dobbin have been sighted around.

Might be also worth a trip to the north especially with the difference with sterling

From letterkenny a trip over the border to the nearest sainsburys should yield plenty of good beers, although not too many of them will be Irish.

Tough call. As mentioned, across to Sainsburys for Belfast Ale and Clotworthy Dobbin is probably the best strategy. With some extreme luck you might find Marks & Spencer Irish Stout in M&S Letterkenny, otherwise try Derry again. Local Tescos could be worth a look as well as they'll sometimes have Curim or O'Hara's in.

But sadly, the answers to your questions are "No" and "None".

If you venture to North East Donegal there is a legendary drink called "football special" you frequently see men down for the GAA wandering round Dublin looking for it.

One beer that isn't craft but is worth looking for is Guinness foreign extra.
