My take on it is, that in every chapter he takes whatever process he's describing and brings it from the simple and basic way of achieving the desired result to the most convoluted and complex way of getting the same result and the reasons behind the more complicated methodology.

Then he then invariably, in the last few lines, says something along the lines of "don't bother with all that complicated stuff, just do it in the most simple and straight-forward way, it'll turn out grand..."
