Just read this on the BBC[/url:2g8vliw8] and Irish Times[/url:2g8vliw8] Websites. I thought it was interesting that there's a €100 "being drunk" fine and a €40 top up for being disorderly. Will this make more people drink at home in an "unsafe" and "unsupervised" environment? <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Recent images from Temple bar indicate this might be necessary. Particularly for those gin drinkers.

I just read that too. If you're not being disorderly or a danger to yourself/others then where do you draw the line? I'm sure plenty of people were drunk in public leaving Farmleigh over the weekend; good job there wasn't a Garda at the gate handing out fines.

If it's just used to free up the courts, as implied, then it's probably a good thing, but separating the 'drunk' from the 'disorderly' looks odd.

I just read that too. If you are drunk in a pub where you are allowed to be drunk then how do you get home without being drunk in public?
Will the guards stand outside the pub and fine everyone who comes out with drink taken? Or will this be just another bit of law that won't be enforced?

Yes, it looks like it'd be down to the individual Garda to make a call <!-- s:? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt="" title="Confused" /><!-- s:? --> . I would have thought 40 for being drunk and 140 for being drunk and disorderly would be a better reflection of the seriousness of being a drunken yob. At what level of being under the influence should such a fine come in? I'm pretty sure I've been a bit drunk leaving the pub (occasionally!), but I'm the type to go for a kebab and then go quietly home to bed!

Over here it usually means a 30 minute cycle from town, and that'S enough to make me avoid excesses <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> (the bus service is great, but after 9pm it's once every hour!)...
