Thanks for the ideas, I've checked out a few of them. I think for me the best idea is to pick up a large plank or similar in a lumber mill and cut it up myself.
I'm buying some good hardwood charcoal in the UK in June and the guy has promised me a bag of random chunks of hardwood he has so that will do nicely too.
