Simon - Sounds like you had a good time checking out the west coast brewing scene . They do have some great ones ! Taproom aspect is great which is why Porterhouse has been so popular and expanded into NY I guess.

David - Everyone is well aware of Bells, Founders and Cigar City . I've visited them all and they all make great beer but everyone knows them here . I am giving a perspective purely on the new up and coming breweries and from where I live and what is shaking now in craft brewing here...
