Beer Stock Clearance at M&S Jervis 14 years 1 month ago #1

Just picked up a couple of bargains from the Marks & Spencer beer range in Jervis Centre:

"Southwold Dark Ale" (a 7.2% 'barley wine' brewed by Adnams)
and "Cheshire Brown Ale" (4.7% brewed by Stockport's Unicorn)are both going for 1.49 (all the other bottles are between 3 and 4 euro).
The fella working there said they were trying to clear the stock as they weren't selling at all (no surprise if they were asking three and a half quid per bottle), but I checked the BBEs and they're up in July and May respectively so no issue there, especially as they're not hop-forward styles.

Have just got them home so haven't tried them yet, but I've enjoyed Adnam's brews in the past and am partial to a Northern Brown - good few bottles on the shelves so get in there if you have the chance!

Southwold Dark Ale is a rebadge of Tally-Ho. Lovely beer.

Used to buy the fantastic Belgian wheat beer that M&S done, but it just got far too expensive. It used to be worth buying when it was 6 for 5, but then I think they pushed the price over €3 a bottle.

Though in fairness it was one of the reasons I started getting into homebrewing so I probably should thank them.

1 Southworld left after I've raided the store. Sorry!

Loads of the other one, though.

Unicorn is the site of the brewery (like St James Gate), the company is Robinsons.

It's a solid brown ale, imo, lots of brown bread and toffee notes and not too heavy.

Good buy at the price.

Had one Cheshire yesterday, tastes more like a bitter than brown - too caramelly, not enough dryness from brown/amber malts imho. Nothing special.
