It's a kind of a Cheesy smoke, which is somewhat unpleasant in my view.

I prefer the milder flavor of Bavarian Rauch malt vs. peat malt. It's a "smoother" (less phenoly) smoke flavor, but you DO have to use a whole lot of it to get any decent smoke flavor out of it.

had this in the brew dock last week and liked it. i did not get get a strong smokey taste/smell off it but it did have a nice roasted after taste

Do you think they are using peat malt instead of rauch?
