Schneider TAP Series: Can someone explain? 15 years 4 months ago #1

Does anyone understand Schneider Weisse's new (well not that new any more) "TAP" series?

"Tap 6" says "Unser Aventinus"$$ which means "our Aventinus", is this just a new bottle for the same old Aventinus or has it changed?

I absolutely LOVED the old purple Aventinus bottle, I hope it's not gone or anything.

Maybe I'm paranoid but Tap 6 tastes a little different than the normal Aventinus to me... -There just seems to be MORE flavor going on. The bottle specifically says that it is fermented via an open fermentation vessel (that is known to produce more banana and clove phenols) but is this any different than the "normal", old Aventinus?

I'm so confused by the new TAP series and the website doesn't clarify it for me; has anyone figured this out yet?

(This TAP6 really is VERY phenoly but I still like it; it actually gives me hope that I'll be ok with the stupid 30 year Westmalle propogation that I have (it's VERY phenoly so far, too).)

This thing has so much cloves, it's making me REALLY want some ham...

You could seriously add a bottle of this Tap6 stuff to 5 liters of a regular, low-hopped beer and just call the resulting concoction a "Christmas/Winter Ale" it's got so much "spice" flavor.

I think I'll have my wife baste our next ham in Tap6 instead of cider or pine apple juice.

I didn't realise it had replaced the regular Schneider, WOW now I am disappointed, althought it does explain something.

I was in the 'against the grain' and I asked about the TAP series - I asked - do you have the normal bottle as well - he looked weirdly at me and said 'that is the standard Schneider'.
Unless I have mixed it up with another weiss - They actually have it on keg, he explained that they store the kegs upside down to ensure the yeast doesn't cake at the bottom. Which was a nice tip as I have two Weiss in kegs at the mo.

I enjoyed it, and I would drink it, its darker and richer than the original and definitely more cloves (suggesting lower fermentation temp), I preferred the original it was more banana, like the Weihenstephaner but this one has a hint of a dunklel.

It's just a change of label.

"Schneider's website":2j43cn1w wrote: From now on, all the Schneider wheat beer specialities have new labels ... Of course, the brewery did not change anything in the traditional recipes or in the taste of the beers.[/quote:2j43cn1w]

The Eisbock is the only one they haven't redesigned and assigned a TAP number to, for some reason.

I got a newslatter from them some time ago. Said that TAP means just that, "vom Fass", and they thought it was better that just No. 1, or Nr. 1 etc. Nothing more complex than that, although they didn't explain why. It confused me at first, but I've gotten used to it <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

<edit> Correction, they say:

I got a couple of crates of the Tap 5 from the UK, and it is basically the old Hopfenweiss, but slightly different. Maybe not quite as good as either of the Schneider/Brooklyn callaborations, but still very good, and a lot more reasonable than the .75 bottles that Brooklyn do. The tap 5 seems to be a regular brew for Schneider now, but still seems difficult to get. If I'm looking for it again, I might see if drinkstore can source it.

Cheers,
Billy.

Actually, that newsletter I got last year said the TAP4 Mein Grünes and TAP5 Meine Hopfenweisse were only for the German market. I've not seen them either! <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->
