I think it's a terrible idea, and is only going to be used as a round-about way to increase prices - e.g. at a gig venue or rugby match or something they won't sell pints, only 2/3rds, and will charge more like 3/4 of the pint price.

Or is that just an Irish thing to do?

You have to show the prices of specific quantities of certain drinks but you're under no obligation to serve in those quantities as long as you charge proportionally.

Thats the law that says you have to display a price list - might there be a separate piece of legislation regarding quantities? Of course if it says nothing at all about quantities - you cant find something that isnt there. I had a quick check around and didnt find anything.

The only thing i did find was in the piece you quoted above - which specifically says you have to isplay the prices for specific measurements (e.g. 568ml of stout, 35.5ml of whiskey)

I didnt see anything which said you are bound to sell in those measurements though.

The UK has a very long and involved body of Weights & Measures law to cover all sorts of eventualities; Ireland doesn't. Here, the law is happy as long as things say honestly and accurately what they are, and the consumer is informed accordingly.

The US is even more deregulated than us, where your glass of beer can be any size the bar wants it to be (like here), but there's no problem calling any of these a pint (which you can't do here). The campaign for fair measure -- The Honest Pint Project[/url:2kmzrjha] -- is run entirely by the consumers themselves.

Irish pint glasses generally aren't really fair as you don't actually get a full pint. While the glass is capable of holding a pint of liquid, the head takes up space. I like the English glasses that have "pint to line" printed on them. Paulaner branded glasses in Irish pubs have this too.
