Goose Island Honker Ale 17 years 8 months ago #1

what a strange beer....smells and tastes like cold tea...very odd. My bottle is a week past its best before date so that may have something to do with it

American takes on British styles are rarely any good. I'm quite partial to the tannic tea taste when it comes in a pint drawn from a cask, but in a fizzy beer from a tiddly bottle it's rubbish.

Mind you, the Martin's Pale Ale from Belgium is along these lines and is lovely.

I wouldn't say that, Honkers Ale & Brooklyn East India Pale Ale are fantastic brews IMO

I had the Honkers Ale recently and thought it was o.k. -nothing spectacular but o.k. Did not realise what type of beer it was until I started drinking it. Just bought one eof all the Goose Island beers in the Abbot some time ago . Think mine was a month of two out of date too but I would not think that would make a major difference.

I bought the honkers ale recently too and it does taste like tea. But I rember the first bottle of it I bought @ the start of this year & it was gorgeous a big goldings flavour. so either the recipe is changed due to american hop shortage or the the beer has changed in the bottle. Make sure and check the use by date in the abbot ale house shelf bottles, as they got a load of cheap crates in and some are them are getting the pension.

I've had Honkers Ale on several occasions and found it to be consistently bland.
