Its the same reason you flush C02 into your corny before filling or squirt C02 into your bottle before filling using a beergun or counter pressure filler minimises oxidation even though the timeframe is a lot shorter for consumption with a growler.

I saw that one of the off licences is selling a litre of beer for a tiny amount more than the price of 3 x 355ml bottles of the same beer. I know I would just buy the bottles in that case.
Its a nice idea and reminds me of the way they sell wine in Italy from barrels, just bring your own empty bottle and fill it. But you pay less for it that way.
