Review: Beer & Philosophy 18 years 5 months ago #1

Discuss TheBeerNut's excellent review of Beer and Philosophy: The Unexamined Beer Isn't Worth Drinking[/url:292sqpt2].

Available from Amazon[/url:292sqpt2]

Sounds like a good book, and worth having as long as you filter through some of the more obvious arguements. I'll put it on my Crimbo list

Or I can give you a lend of mine. I got it free, like.

Sure! That'd be great.

Very nice article. So, over all is it worth shelling out for the book?

Perhaps I should confess that I once read Kant for pleasure. Not for long mind. Didn't Bertrand Russell say that the greatest advantage pre-Kantian philosophers had was that they didn't have to read Kant to become philosophers? I get the feeling many in that field would like to expunge Kant from the record.

I didn't know Russell said that, but he's totally right.

Yes, I think it is worth having, despite some of the dreadful, cringe-making tweeness. The Oliver and Calagione articles are must-reads for anyone interested in the origins and workings of craft brewing, and the Nietzsche piece is quite fun and one of the very few that actually blends beer and philosophy in an interesting way.

The book also gives you a formula for calculating the precise refractive index of beer goggles, should you need to work out the ratio of pints consumed to perceived attractiveness of the opposite sex.

It's revealing, if not surprising, that the two best articles (in the opinion of our trusted reviewer ) are by craft brewers and steer clear of the heavy philosophical arguments.
