Nice article BeerNut, cheers. One question...did you find out why there's such a discrepancy between the prices in the pub and those in the supermarkets? A friend of mine suggested that it's an initiative by the government to prevent binge drinking by keeping people out of pubs. But the result of this is that people get steamed at home, stumble into the towns pubs, have their weekly moan about beer prices, organise a party and then drink till the early morning! Binge drinking Norway stlye!

Well done The Beernut! A very informative and enjoyable read. I suppose you will now be looking to ICB to recoup some of your research expenses!

Thanks all. An in-depth account of all the individual beers will be going up on a certain blog in the next few days.

I didn't think the discrepancy was that big: a 100-150% mark-up is similar to what you'd have in Dublin, isn't it? The government policy is to limit access to alcohol, and tax it, as much as possible wherever and whenever they can. They toyed with prohibition last century, switching it on and off for various types of drink at various points.

Nøgne Ø's website[/url:2ua4k806] currently consists of the letter they got from the government telling them that their website was illegal. I'm thinking perhaps they should relocate to Saudi Arabia to work under more liberal alcohol laws.

Yep. Funnily enough, the Northern Irish and Scottish do exactly the same thing: it's a general northern European thing, I think. Bizarrely, the Norwegians seem to believe that doing all your drinking in one go, and drinking just to get hammered, is healthier than the usual continental fashion for drinking small amounts regularly.

Great article.

A friend of mine lives in Oslo so I've been over there skiing a few times. It's funny (and depressing in equal measures) to see so many empty pubs for most of the week only for Saturday night to herald an explosion of people dying to get tanked up and party.
